Cleaning up coal power
15 Aug 2003
Innogy has applied to the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for consent to build a Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) plant at its coal-fired power station at Aberthaw, South Wales.
The application follows a successful feasibility study at the power station. The plant, which would cost around £100 million, would reduce sulphur dioxide from the power station chimney emissions, enabling the station to meet tougher European environmental constraints which are due to come into force in 2008.
The new plant would use seawater to convert the sulphur dioxide to sodium sulphate and calcium sulphate.
If consent is given, the plant could be built and operational by 2008.
The power station currently produces around one third of the electric power used in Wales.
