Coal-to-oil technique
4 Jun 2003
Aker Kvaerner is to join forces with ABB to build a coal liquefaction plant in Inner Mongolia.
The project is the first commercial application of a new process, direct coal liquefaction, which converts coal to hydrocarbon liquids via hydrogenation.
The companies are currently collaborating on project management services for the plant. The plant will produce low-cost clean fuels.
The project is one of several won by Aker Kvaerner over the past few months, the company states in its first-quarter report. Other process projects include a polymers plant in Belgium and a butanediol operation in Saudi Arabia.
It has also secured construction contracts for gas power projects in California and Texas, and an energy-from-waste project in Sweden.
