BP takes strategic decision to introduce Emerson digital control systems at UK refineries
Emerson nets major BP contract in US
Austin, Texas —BP has appointed Emerson Process Management, part of Emerson, as its main contractor to replace aging process automation systems at its three largest US refineries.
The contract covers 18 units at BP’s Whiting, Indiana; Texas City, Texas; and Carson, California sites. Together, these units refine about 1 million barrels of crude per day -- about 7% of total US refining capacity, said Emerson.
Under the deal, Emerson will install its DeltaV digital automation and control systems at 18 different production units to improve efficiency and reliability at the refineries. The units will include fluid catalytic cracker units, cokers, ultracrackers and alkylation units.
Emerson is to lead the front-end engineering design, detailed design, and implementation of the new digital systems. The project, it noted, will feature PlantWeb digital automation architecture and asset management applications.
“Following an extensive evaluation of the supply market and available technologies, BP has taken a strategic decision to introduce Emerson digital control systems into its refining base,” said Patrick Gower, BP Refining vice president, US region, in an Emerson press statement.
“The powerful combination of Emerson's proven DeltaV systems, PlantWeb technology and a compelling value proposition positioned Emerson as the supplier of choice for this program and now resets the baseline for this sort of project,” Gower added.
