Event for Landia director's son, seriously injured in Afghanistan
7 Mar 2011
Whitchurch, UK – Representatives from numerous process industries are set to turn up in force for a special charity golf day on 21 April at Hawkstone Park in Shrewsbury.
Proceeds from the Texas Scramble (four-person teams) competition go directly to Corporal Simon Vaughan who was seriously injured whilst serving in Afghanistan in December 2008 when his WMIK Land Rover drove over an IED (improvised explosive device), catapulting him seven metres into the air.
Simon, who is the son of Hugh Vaughan, director of pump and mixer manufacturer Landia UK, suffered a broken jaw, shattered pelvis, collapsed lungs, broken back and various shrapnel wounds – but worst of all it was an acute brain injury that has changed his life forever and taken away the person once known by his family and friends.
More than two years on since that day, Simon has still not been able to return home. He spent almost eight months in Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital, followed by nearly a year in The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability, and is currently at Headley Court Military Hospital in Surrey.
Funds from the golf day will go to adapting a bungalow so that Simon can finally return home to his family. The property was originally purchased with compensation money but was later found to be unsafe, so had to be knocked down and started again.
With no further funds available from the MOD, proceeds from the golf day will go a long way to making the bungalow fit for Simon’s use.
