Imtech technology for Plymouth waste-to-energy plant
20 May 2011
Plyµouth, UK – German group MVV Energie AG has awarded a Euro30m contract to Imtech NV to provide technology for an energy-from-waste power plant to be constructed in Plymouth, in south-west England. The CHP facility will generate 23 MW of heat and 22.5MW electricity.
Around 245ktpa of domestic waste, collected from 650,000 homes in and around Plymouth, will be converted into sustainable energy at the new plant. The South West Devon Waste Partnership has been set up for this purpose.
Much of the energy produced will be used by the nearby Royal Navy base in Plymouth. This, said Imtech, guarantees that the waste collected in the region will be recycled and used locally, efficiently and in an environmentally friendly way.
Imtech Deutschland (Germany) is supplying the steam-turbine generator with a special air-cooled condenser. The German division of Imtech is also responsible for the overall provision of water and steam, the innovative heat extraction technique and the handling of water and condensate.
Imtech UK experts have assisted their German colleagues with the tender procedures and the health and safety regulations. Together, they will be creating “a more or less unique total solution for the UK market,” the company claimed.
Imtech will start work in spring 2012. The energy-from-waste power plant will be operational in 2014.
