Power station protest called off
19 May 2011
London – GMB trade union members postponed a demonstration outside West Burton Power Station after Cape Insulation offered to withdraw unskilled labour from its work at the plant.
The union is in dispute over the contractor’s use of unskilled workers rather than skilled labour ’required by the agreements’ to strip lagging at the Retford, Notts power station. The plant is currently out of commission for repair and maintenance during the summer months.
The union called off a planned protest, it said, to allow the situation to develop and become clearer after Cape Insulation had given assurances around the use of unskilled labour.
“This seems like progress has been made but the demo is postponed until we know more,” said Phil Whitehurst, GMB national official for engineering construction.
