Honeywell scoops automation contract at Finland's largest milk producer

Kuopio, Finland – Valio, the largest milk producer in Finland, has selected Honeywell to provide a production automation system for a new plant producing demineralised whey powder at its complex in Lapinlahti.
Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS) will deploy its Experion Process Knowledge System at the Finnish site, which is being designed to meet strict hygiene, food safety and energy efficiency standards. Demineralised whey powder is increasingly used in products such as baby food.
The vendor will also modify the architecture of Valio’s existing process history database to provide a “richer, more flexible environment” for the collection, storage and analysis of process data used in the facility. HPS will also install, test and commission the new equipment.
“We’ve enjoyed a successful relationship with Honeywell since 1986, so when it came to selecting a technology supplier for this critical new facility they were the natural choice,” said Antero Ylitalo, project director, Valio.
“HPS’ industry experience and intimate knowledge of our business were key factors in our decision. The new process automation system will help us meet increasing global demand for whey-based products and strengthen our competitive position while providing a boost for the local economy.”
“The production of whey-based products such as raw material for baby food requires a carefully and rigorously planned and operated production system,” added Orhan Genis, vice president of sales & business development, Honeywell EMEA.
