7 Nov 2011
Aberdeen, UK – In the recent Oil & Gas UK Awards 2011, Ann Davies, a well intervention engineer (subsea) at BP, won the Oil & Gas UK award for overall excellence, in the individual category.
The young technician of the year award went to John Piper, an instrument technician at BP Exploration and the award for mentoring was won by Paul Martin, who works for Petrofac as a platform trainer.
In the corporate categories, the award for people development went to Cape and RBG Ltd was the winner of the business efficiency award.
Overall Excellence: Ann Davies was nominated by BP for leadership qualities which she demonstrated while successfully leading the implementation of one of the most challenging well interventions executed in the North Sea during 2010, a project which involved complex logistics and the use of concentric coiled tubing vacuum technology on an unmanned installation.
Young Technician of the Year: John Piper was selected because of his exceptional ’can-do’ attitude to work and his self motivated drive towards understanding the challenges of his job and sourcing solutions. Piper started from scratch in the oil and gas industry and demonstrated his ability at a very early stage, earning the Tallow Chandler Award. He is now pursuing an honours degree in engineering while holding a wide range of significant responsibilities on BP’s Magnus platform.
Mentoring: As a platform trainer on Alwyn for Petrofac, Paul Martin has made his mark as a passionate and dedicated mentor. He has already mentored around 15 colleagues working for Petrofac and Total through various stages of their career and, in his own time, helped his fellow employees achieve their NVQ and SVQ qualifications. Martin’s work has been recognised by OPITO who have asked him to become an external verifier.
People Development: Cape’s strategy over the past seven years has been to make a significant investment in training and developing the skills of its employees. It has a well resourced and fully integrated system through which it delivers a suite of training and development programmes that are used group-wide.
Business Efficiency: RBG Limited has developed an innovative type of contract for delivering fabric maintenance services. The system has the potential for widespread industry application and could have substantial overall impact on industry competitiveness. The judges also noted that the system ensured enhanced alignment between client and contractor.
