LG Chem has selected Burckhardt Compression to deliver a Hyper Compressor as secondary compressor and a process gas compressor as booster/primary compressor for its LDPE, ethylene vinyl acetate plant in Daesan, Korea. Both compressors are to be installed in the main production line and be interdependent. Burckhardt has the overall responsibility for the package - for compressing ethylene gas over the whole compression range. Hyper Compressors are high pressure reciprocating compressors for LDPE plants with discharge pressures up to 3,500 bar.
Shell Chemicals has completed a project to increase the flexibility of its polyol production facility in Europe and increase CASE (coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers) polyol capacity from the site at Pernis, The Netherlands. Modifications made to both the plant and process technology are enabling CASE-grade CARADOL polyols to be made on a continuous production line for the first time in Shell’s history. The continuous process technology avoids interruptions in production due to batch changes, raises plant throughput, and improves polyol properties by reducing odour and levels of volatile organic compounds.
SKF company S2M has won a two-year contract to supply SKF magnetic bearings and associated electronics for subsea compression trains used in the Åsgard gas field in the Norwegian Sea. The magnetic bearings will be fitted on the motor compressor shaft systems on the compressor units that maintain gas flow pressure level. The contract is with MAN Diesel & Turbo, Aker Solutions Norway and Statoil. The Åsgard gas field project will involve placing two hermetically sealed compressor units installed at a depth of between 200 and 300 metres on the seabed. The units function by maintaining discharge pressure in the pipeline and compensate for the falling suction pressure as the gas field is depleted, thereby boosting gas flow.
SGS has provided a hot hydrogen attack (HHA) inspection for the Shell refinery in Batangas, Philippines. During 24-28 Oct, an SGS team inspected piping and a heat exchanger for HHA by applying advanced non-destructive testing methods. HHA is a potentially serious form of degradation caused by carbides reacting in steel, thereby forming methane. The probability of HHA damage depends on its partial hydrogen pressure and operating temperature. To inspect the parent material of the piping and heat exchanger, SGS used manual backscatter and velocity ratio techniques, and inspected the weld for cracks using manual ultrasonic testing (UT). In case of any indication of HHA cracking, SGS carried out time of flight diffraction (TOFD) and manual pulse echo on welds for verification.
Sahaviriya Steel Industries (SSI) has placed an order for a 40 tonne outrigger crane for the blast furnace at its Redcar, UK steel plant from Konecranes UK. The furnace is linked to a modern steel making facility, which has an annual steel slab production capacity of 3.5m tonnes. The outrigger crane will operate on a 12 metre span and is to have a 61mt lifting ability.
Pfaudler is to upgrade mixers for a major refiner of precious metals in South Africa, which is set to significantly increase the capacity of their process reactors. Working alongside its Robbins & Myers sister company Chemineer, Pfaudler’s process solution is designed to ensure optimum mixing of platinum group metal concentrates, which can severely damage vessels when not set up correctly. The supply covers internals for 80 WSA condensers for condensation of sulphuric acid, eight units for acid mist control and a complete acid system. (More on Process Engineering)
HRS Heat Exchangers Ltd has supplied two KH 225 273/12 4.0m shell-and-tube heat exchangers to the Waste Recycling Group (WRG) Eastcroft Energy from Waste Plant in Nottingham. The installation, said HRS, recovers waste heat in the high pressure hot water for the EfW incinerator that feeds a turbine. The previous heat exchangers had problems with welds and tubes failing. HRS matched up to the existing site connections and designed to suit the space left by the failed parts. The 4m-long units were supplied with AEL headers to facilitate visual inspection of the tube side of the heat exchanger. As the specs required a design pressure of 60bar, tested to 90bar, the heat exchangers were designed to Pressure Equipment Directive category 4 which required 10% x-ray inspection of the welds.
Metso Paper has entered into a global license agreement with Autodesk, making the software available to users throughout the Metso group. The agreement incorporates a broad spectrum of Autodesk products, including its Inventor, Navisworks, AutoCAD Mechanical and AutoCAD Electrical software. Metso sites can now request additional software licenses at peak times, and get instant access to them. Metso sites only pay for what they use. Metso Mining and Construction Technology (MCT) segment is using Inventor software for product development, conceptual design and manufacturing, and anticipates usage will increase for more detailed design work. By collaborating with Metso Paper, Metso MCT can tap into the global license pool, driving further efficiencies in its usage of Inventor.
Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. has received a four-year framework contract from Electricite de France (EDF) to provide owner engineering services in support of gas infrastructure projects across Europe. Jacobs is providing a wide range of management, consultancy and design services relating to project management; permitting and administration; specifications and conceptual design; procurement; and supervision of construction. The scope of the framework project consists of infrastructure development for natural gas storage and distribution, including gas pipelines, underground storage facilities and regasification terminals.
Amarinth has delivered £750K of API 610 OH2 pumps to ZADCO for an offshore pilot plant at Zirku Island, Abu Dhabi. The pilot plant was commissioned by ZADCO on Zirku Island, 140km north-west of Abu Dhabi. A produced water treatment system was required by ZADCO. The pumps for the filtration system required a low shear design in order that the oil and water were not emulsified. The produced water was high in H2S, and so the pumps had to be manufactured in a high nickel alloy to resist corrosion.
Amarinth has secured further orders from ZADCO to upgrade API 610 VS4 vertical pumps, which it supplied to the company in 2009, with flow sensors and external flush lines. The new sensors ensure that the pump bearings do not run dry, a health and safety concern in such hazardous environments where a major pump failure can cause loss of life.
Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.’s Chemetics unit has been awarded a design and fabrication contract by El Dorado Chemical Co. for three sulfuric acid coolers to be installed in its acid plant in El Dorado, Arkansas. The construction cost to El Dorado is estimated to be $700k, with a Chemetics contract worth $500k. The scope of work involves the design and fabrication of drying, interpass and final anodically protected sulfuric acid coolers. The coolers are replacing two of the original Chemetics coolers supplied in 1975 and one from another vendor supplied in 2008, when the plant was upgraded to double absorption.
Linde Group is to manage the entire gas supply system for steel company Hebei Puyang Iron and Steel Ltd, in Wu’an, north China, and will invest around Euro120m in the project.
