KIRK progresses Tullis Russell biomass plant
17 May 2012
Glenrothes, UK – KIRK Environmental has announced that construction is well underway on its part of the Tullis Russell project to establish a £200-million biomass plant at Markinch, near Glenrothes, Scotland.
Work on the three woodchip storage silos had commenced in mid-March, while last month saw the first silo has almost reach its finished height of 18 metres above the ground.
The 20-metre diameter reinforced concrete structures are being constructed to store both virgin and recycled woodchips; each silo has a volume in excess of 5000m3 and is reclaimed using a Saxlund TubeFeeder discharger.
KIRK is working for Saxlund International, which is developing the project with Canning Conveyor providing the feeding and silo unloading systems which are scheduled for completion in July this year.
The entire plant is expected to be operational in early 2013. It is expected to consume around 400ktpa as it generates 50MW of renewable energy which will power the plant itself and export a significant amount into the grid.
