IChemE event targets low-carbon energy
26 Mar 2013
London - The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) is to stage a new conference in May, focusing on how biomass feedstocks can be used to generate low carbon energy.
The event, titlled ‘Delivering Low Carbon Energy from Biomass’, takes place in London on 2 May.
Confirmed speakers include IChemE past president and chair of the UK government’s Leadership Forum for Industrial Biotechnology, Ian Shott; AB Sugar’s head of energy Matthew White and the University of Nottingham’s Ed Lester.
The conference is aimed at people with an interest in low carbon energy supply, sustainable development, green growth and recycling. The event is being staged in association with IChemE’s Energy Conversion Special Interest Group.
IChemE director of policy Andrew Furlong says: “Just 3% of UK energy comes from biomass but, if we’re going to meet 2050 targets of slashing emissions by 80% and upping our energy from renewable sources to 15%, this figure simply has to increase.
“The event will focus on some of the current and emerging technologies in the field, the research being undertaken in academic circles and how industry is adapting. We’ll also be hearing about government legislation and regulation and the impact it’s having on industry.”
