Delivering process safety across the board

Darlington, UK – The National Skills Academy Process Industries has launched its latest process safety training course - Process Safety Management for Operations (PSMO).
This course is the third in a series of process safety courses developed by the Academy to meet the requirements of the Process Safety Management (PSM) training standards.
Previous Academy courses for Process Safety Leadership and Process Safety Management Foundations have focussed on building the business case and awareness. They have also encouraged reflection on the action needed to be taken on process safety with senior executives, managers and supervisors.
This new course provides operations and maintenance personnel with a clear awareness and understanding of the principles of process safety, and the associated hazards and controls as it affects them on their site.
Process Safety Management for Operations now takes our process safety awareness training to the front line, according to Academy course director Neil Smith.
“Operators and maintenance personnel have to deal with and manage the risks and hazards on their process or plant on a daily basis, so it is crucial that they build and maintain a high level of awareness of the principles of process safety, and fully understand the significant contribution that they make to effective process safety management,” said Smith.
According to the Skills Academy, the PSMO course allows participants to review actual incidents and near misses and explore how the lessons learned can be applied to their own setting.
It is designed to emphasise the value of communication and feedback between operators, maintenance personnel and management and how this contributes to continual improvements in process safety.
The delivery of PSMO has also been tailored to meet the requirements of operator and maintenance personnel shift patterns with bite-sized modules delivered through a licenced training package that puts the organisation in control of the training delivery.
As part of this licenced option, the Academy provides all the course materials and a trainer familiarisation and approval package to enable employers to get their PSMO training up and running.
- The PSM training standards have been designed in partnership with senior industry HSEQ representatives, UK trade associations and the Health & Safety Executive, to raise the profile and increase the take-up of process safety awareness training across high hazard industries.
- The Process Safety Leadership for Senior Executives course provides participants with the tools to develop a detailed understanding of the business case for effective process safety management. It offers a clear insight into how to promote a positive safety culture throughout the organisation through the effective engagement of the workforce.
- The Process Safety Management Foundations course provides the fundamental knowledge and understanding of the principles of process safety management. It is aimed at managers, supervisors, designers, safety personnel, and senior contract employees, and suitable for young engineers and anyone who would like to develop a more detailed understanding of process safety management.
