Lords probe waste and the bioeconomy
26 Jul 2013
The House of Lords’ Science and Technology Committee yesterday launched an inquiry into waste and the bioeconomy, inviting contributions from industry.
The committee will explore the potential to create a multi-million pound economy from waste by creating goods, fuels and chemicals from the by-products of agriculture, industry and households.
In particular the inquiry will focus on the technology used to exploit bio-waste and waste gases in order to generate high-value products, according to the committee’s Call for Evidence published yesterday.
The committee will investigate whether the country is making the most of this technology and how it can be further exploited to turn the UK into a world leader.
Questions asked in the Call for Evidence include:
- Should more be done to promote basic research and development?
- Does the UK have a clear strategy for promoting the bioeconomy in comparison to other parts of the world?
- Are there measures in place to support the commercialisation of the technology?
- How important is the technology in providing a viable alternative to sending waste to landfill or other uses?
Submissions to the inquiry must be made by September 27.
