GSK to pilot process safety course

GlaxoSmithKline has partnered with the University of Sheffield to develop a short course that addresses pharmaceutical & consumer process safety risks.
Head of environment, health and safety (EHS) at GSK John Kelleher informed delegates at the ABB process safety management conference last week that currently no course or module exists in the UK that addresses pharmaceutical and consumer manufacturing process safety risks.
The aim of this short-course is to build capability across site leadership teams, EHS specialists and front line leaders
Head of EHS at GSK John Kelleher
In partnership with the University of Sheffield, GSK has designed a four-day module on pharmaceutical and consumer manufacturing process safety risks, aimed at larger chemical facilities.
“The aim of this short-course is to build capability across site leadership teams, EHS specialists and front line leaders and will be available industry-wide,” Kelleher said.
The course, which is split into four parts, will focus on the fundamentals of material properties, the link between material properties and fire/explosion principles to the risks in typical processing activities, the application of hazard identification (HAZID) and risk ranking, plus a day that concentrates on ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) demonstration and basis of safety.
Kelleher told delegates the course will be trialled in January 2014 and will be fully implemented from September.
