Nuclear research agreement reached
28 Jan 2014
The National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) have agreed to collaborate on areas of nuclear research development.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) ensures both the NNL and the Nuclear AMRC work together to help advance areas of nuclear research, as well as relevant policy matters.
Both bodies will collaborate in the key area of nuclear skills development, with a strong emphasis on the development of Subject Matter Experts, working alongside the National Skills Academy for Nuclear and its extension in the field of nuclear manufacturing.

NNL MD Paul Howarth
NNL managing director Paul Howarth said: “Mike Tynan [chief executive of the Nuclear AMRC] and I both recognise the enormous potential that exists for our two organisations to work closely together to progress the overall agenda of research in the nuclear sector.”
Under terms of the agreement, each organisation will have access to a wide range of facilities and equipment, and both bodies have agreed that these may be made mutually available to one another, and to some third parties.
The NNL has facilities at Sellafield and Workington in Cumbria, Preston in Lancashire, Risley in Cheshire, Stonehouse in Gloucestershire and Harwell in Oxfordshire.
The Nuclear AMRC meanwhile will offer its research factory at the Advanced Manufacturing Park, South Yorkshire, as well as supporting laboratory facilities at The University of Manchester’s Dalton Nuclear Institute.
