Are condition monitoring devices ready to go wireless? Louisa Hearn looks at emerging standards and how these are changing the market.
Wireless condition monitoring technologies are shaking off their reputation for poor reliability as process industries begin to tap their potential.
By adding wireless condition monitoring devices to key pieces of equipment, engineers can reduce operating failures and boost operational efficiency says Nick Thorne, managing director at Winchester Innovation.
“Wireless has become a lot cheaper, and easier to apply,” says Thorne. “By monitoring things that move at a very rapid rate, you can start to find patterns in the data that can give you a clue to the health of your machinery. This means you can really start to pick out potential problems a lot earlier than previously.”
This is especially advantageous in hazardous or remote environments, and also overcomes many of the issues associated with adding wired technology to equipment that vibrates or has moving parts.
