Smart water spend to double
11 Feb 2014
Global spending on smart water management (SWM) technologies is set to more than double in the next five years, according to new research.
The report, Smart Water Management Market - Worldwide Market Forecasts and Analysis to 2018, that the global SWM market will grow from $5.43 billion in 2013 to $12.03 billion in 2018.
It estimates that increasingly SWM technologies such as distribution network monitoring, advanced pressure management, and analytics will be favoured over the current dominant technologies of advanced water meters, meter data management, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) solutions.
The adoption of cloud-based solutions for distribution network monitoring, which require absolutely no capital expenditure from utility’s end is also expected to witness greater traction in the near future.
The key driver for this shift is identified as an increasing awareness among water utilities of the need to streamline their operations, better manage their assets and distribution network, reduce maintenance and repair cost, reduce energy costs in pumping water, and reduce non-revenue water losses due to leaks and theft.
Technology suppliers mentioned in the report include ABB, GE, Schneider and Siemens.
