Biffa opts for GE kit

GE’s Distributed Power arm is working alongside Clarke Energy to help Biffa modernise UK landfill gas-to-energy plants.
Engineering firm Clarke Energy has been selected to supply waste management firm Biffa with eight GE Jenbacher landfill gas engines as part of a modernisation of several landfill gas-to-energy (LFGE) plants across the UK.
As part of the project, Clarke Energy – GE’s authorised Jenbacher gas engine distributor for the UK – will provide Biffa with new 1MW gas engines to replace the LFGE generators that have reached the end of their operating life cycles.
The GE engines will have the capacity to produce a combined 8.5MW of renewable electricity – enough to power 20,000 homes, GE claims.
The Jenbacher gas engines are powered by landfill gas, which is created from solid waste decomposition and then recovered as a renewable fuel.
“We are pleased to collaborate with Clarke Energy by supplying our Jenbacher gas engines for Biffa’s modernisation of several its landfill gas-to-energy plants across the UK,” said said Leon van Vuuren, global Jenbacher gas engines sales leader for GE’s Distributed Power business.
The new LFGE units are expected to be delivered to Biffa in October.
