Fatality on North Sea rig
6 Jan 2016
Statoil and COSL have confirmed that one person has lost their life and another two have been injured after a breaking wave hit the COSL Innovator drilling rig last year.
The incident occurred on 30th December 2015 in Statoil’s Troll oil field in the North Sea, where it operates the COSL rig.
COSL Drilling Europe chief executive officer Jørgen Arnesen said*: “This is a tragic event and we are all in deep sorrow. Our thoughts are with the families, crew and their colleagues.”
Arnesen said Norway’s Petroleum Safety Authority will now investigate the incident.
“We are awaiting the outcome of this investigation,” he said.
The rig, which had been taken off the well prior to the incident occurring, is heading ashore under its own power while the evacuation of crew members takes place, Statoil said.
