Pressure relief devices (PRD) are simple in design and operation, but present some significant challenges.
Problems presented by PRDs include: sticking of the valve seating; leaking due to damaged sealing/seating; corrosion; holes in the rupture disc causing leaks; non-operating rupture discs; unawareness of activation when overpressure occurs; and unwanted emissions and flaring.
All of these issues can be detected by installing WirelessHART devices (pressure, discrete and ultrasonic transmitters), says Emerson.
Its non-intrusive and wireless low-cost solutions designed for PRD application deliver the information needed for compliance accessible through an existing host system or historian, says the company. The source of release in the flare system can then be quickly identified. Accurate date and time stamping is provided to record the event.
