Biomass to power science park
27 Jun 2016
Construction of a new £140 million biomass plant has begun at science and technology innovation centre, Discovery Park.
According to BWSC, which recently took possession of the development of the site, the new biomass plant will take two years to complete, creating 30 full-time jobs once operational.
Biomass energy will produce all the power and heat requirements for the park, and will come from a variety of wood types, including coppice grown locally in Kent and East Sussex, the company said.
The new biomass plant is a vital part of ensuring the site’s ongoing success
Discovery Park managing director Paul Barber
Discovery Park managing director Paul Barber said: “The agreement to press ahead with the new biomass energy plant, not only represents a major investment in the site, but puts the park in the unique position of being supplied with a reliable source of green energy.
“The new biomass plant is a vital part of ensuring the site’s ongoing success – part of a number of investments and ongoing work that will not only create jobs and prosperity for East Kent but increases its sustainability too.”
Construction of the biomass plant also coincides with the development of 46,000 sq ft manufacturing facility, which is set to launch in January next year.
