Spirax Sarco’s specialism in steam system engineering has enabled a chemical industry client to cut the cost of heat losses by nearly 50% at its Teesside plant.
Johnson Matthey was able to prune £60,000 off the bill for its Billingham site and also made significant reductions in maintenance costs exacerbated by regular flange leaks.
Spirax replaced the company’s oversized 1,000m long steam line and 36-inch diameter pipe with a new line 25% shorter and a pipe comprising 8 and 4-inch sections.
Chris McHale, gas services and operations team leader at Johnson Matthey, commented: “The lesson we’ve taken from this project is that there are huge rewards to be had by challenging the way things have always been done.
“Replacing a dated and problematic steam line with one much better suited to our current application may sound basic, but the cost, usability and safety benefits have proved second to none.”
