Launch of £490m Anglo-French electricity venture
1 Mar 2017
Energy minister Jesse Norman has laid the foundation stone for the new Eleclink electricity connection that will run between the UK and France.
The cost of the project is put at present at £490 million and it is estimated the venture will be able to power the equivalent of 2 million new homes.
The government says the connection will mean better access to the European electricity market and had the potential to reduce energy bills because electricity would be more easily exported or imported and better able to access cheaper prices.
It is set to play an instrumental part in the supply of electricity to the UK
Jacques Gounon, chairman and CEO, Groupe Eurotunnel
The connection will be routed through Eurotunnel, whose chairman and chief executive officer of Groupe Eurotunnel Jacques Gounon said:
“ElecLink further underlines how important the Channel Tunnel is to Britain and France. Not only is it a vital transport link, it is set to play an instrumental part in the supply of electricity to the UK, France and continental Europe.”
