Ian Shott, chairman of pharmaceutical and fine chemical sector consultancy BPE, has been awarded one of the UK’s top engineering prizes in recognition of his work for the industry.
He was named as this year’s recipient of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s President’s Medal.
The award recognises significant contributions to the academy’s aims and initiative in promoting excellence in engineering. Past winners have included Apple senior vice president of design Jonathan Ive, chair of Arup’s board of trustees Terry Hill, and nuclear engineer Sue Ion.
Chairman of the National Physical Laboratory, David Grant, who nominated Shott for the award, said: “Ian Shott is eminently deserving of the President’s Medal for his exceptional contribution to the success of the Academy and his far-reaching influence on enterprise and engineering innovation in the UK.”
A fellow of the academy, Shott oversaw the launch of the academy’s Enterprise Hub which has helped 52 startups generate nearly 200 jobs, and go on to raise over £36 million in follow-on funding since its foundation in 2013.
Commenting on the news of his award, he said: “It is an honour to be a fellow and it has been a privilege to be involved in a number of the Academy’s activities, and I am very grateful for this award that recognises the importance of making the UK a leading nation for engineering innovation.”
The formal award of the President’s Medal will take place at the Academy’s annual awards dinner at London’s Landmark Hotel on 29 June.
