OPITO confirms McDonald as chief executive officer
13 Jul 2017
OPITO, the international workforce, safety and standards organisation for oil and gas, has appointed John McDonald as its new chief executive following the sudden death of David Doig earlier this year.
McDonald, who has been interim CEO since the start of 2017 and was previously the organisation’s UK managing director, has an extensive background in vocational training and education.
He was formerly a director of Abu Dhabi government body ACTVET, and director at the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) where he helped create new markets in Asia and the Middle East.
Commenting on his appointment, McDonald said: “I plan to ensure that OPITO continues to be the global industry-led organisation that is not only driving and delivering the skills agenda, but is also helping to modernise standards and the way we improve competency by embracing digital technologies.
“I am honoured to take up this role at a crucial stage in OPITO’s development and will ensure our standards add value and continue to serve the needs of the 21st century learner.
“I look forward to building further links and partnerships with industry as we strive to ensure that safety is at the heart of decision-making and skills initiatives remain relevant, covering every stage of an employee’s career, and continue to attract people into our industry.”
