Vaccines for CEL
21 Apr 2004
Chiron Vaccines has commissioned CEL International to design and build a new vaccines plant, right, at its Liverpool site in a deal worth some £85million.
Already the largest vaccines plant in the UK, the site will gain additional capacity for development and manufacturing, with scale-up facilities and production lines for flu vaccines included in the design.
Some £20million of the cost of the project will be contributed by the North West Development Agency, as a reward for Chiron's support for the biotechnology industry in the region 'The site here in Liverpool is already one of the world's largest producers of flu vaccine, and with most of the production destined for the US, this is a great success story for Britain,' comments Health Minister John Hutton.
CEL won the contract because of its expertise in biopharmaceuticals and its previous work on the site, according to its managing director, Ed Wilson. 'It is very rewarding to see CEL's focus on service excellence has again resulted in winning such a prestigious project against such strong competition,' he says. 'It underpins our expertise in the biotechnology market.'
