The clean steam machine
15 Jan 2000
`Clean steam' is a requirement in many processes involving sterilisation or humidification. For these and applications requiring direct injection - such as in the pharmaceuticals and food and drink industries - the steam needs generating at source. Spirax Sarco's new unfired clean steam generator (CSG) provides an all-in-one solution.
Made entirely in 316 stainless steel, the CSG uses existing plant steam supplies to heat demineralised water to produce high quality, uncontaminated `clean' steam. It is a complete preassembled package mounted on a skid.
Connected to an existing steam supply, the CSG can generate clean steam at a rate between 45 and 5500kg/h at pressures from 3 to 7barg.
Pictured is a 5500kg/h unit at the Guinness brewery in Kilkenny, Ireland. Clean steam generated at 3barg is used to sterilise beer kegs at 115 degrees C for 30 seconds, as well as for sterilising carbon filters on the demineralisation plant to 120 degrees C to remove chlorine from the CSG feedwater.
