Tubes fight back against plates
15 Jan 2000
According to HDE Metallwerk, the high heat transfer rates expected of plate heat exchangers can now also be achieved using tube bundle heat exchangers fitted with the company's Turbo-Helix tubes. These have a corrugated geometry that creates turbulence in linear and non-linear flow conditions. All fluid particles are continually brought into contact with the heat-transferring tube wall, resulting in gentle agitation and improved heat transfer.
Because of the tube geometry, turbulence is created both inside and outside the tube, increasing heat transfer across the tube. Another advantage is the mechanical one of corrugated tubing offering greater stability than plain tubing. This means thinner tubing can be used, which in turn further improves the heat transfer.
The turbulent flows set up also reduce fouling of the exchanger, saving costs in maintenance and downtime.
