One-stop-shop for batch plant
15 Jan 2000
At its Lutterworth site in Leicestershire, Brenntag UK, part of Europe's largest chemical distributor, has recently installed an advanced batching plant that was designed, developed and commissioned in close collaboration with George Fischer, the Coventry-based manufacturer of industrial pressure pipe systems.
George Fischer was able to provide all elements of the plant, from pumps and piping, through to flow sensors and pH meters. The first stage is receipt of bulk chemicals such as hydrogen peroxide, sulphuric, phosphoric, nitric and hydrochloric acids by road tanker. These are downloaded through nine lines each incorporating a Fischer TK pump of 40m3/h capacity at 10m head into their respective bunded holding tanks.
The plastics materials used throughout the system are carefully selected to suit the specific application, and the tanks are manufactured from either polyethylene, mild or stainless steel.
The different solution strengths for the plant's batch products are obtained by dilution with purified water being injected into the tanks from the top. Again George Fischer pumps are used here. Miniblock pumps with a 12m3/h flow at 7.5m head are used for circulating/mixing/filling.
Control of the operation is aided by low flow sensors from Fischer's Signet transmitter range.
