Technip-Coflexip has been awarded a turnkey contract from BASF for the conversion of a diaphragm chlor-alkali plant to membrane technology.
The project, worth more than 50 million euros, will be carried out by Technip-Coflexip in Dusseldorf, in close collaboration with Asahi Kasei, a supplier of bipolar cell membrane technology.
Technip-Coflexip/Asahi Kasei's scope of work covers the license, the basic design, detail engineering, procurement, supply of equipment and materials as well as the construction of the plant.
In addition to the complete exchange of the cell room equipment, which is the heart of the plant in Ludwigshafen, Germany, the project will include modifications of all the associated systems, such as the salt dissolution, brine treatment and caustic evaporation systems, as well as the chlorine and hydrogen treatment systems.
Scheduled for completion at the end of 2003, the converted plant will have a capacity of 620 metric tons of chlorine per day.
