New vehicles have harder coats
26 Jun 2002
Decoma International has developed a new, proprietary hardcoat technology and manufacturing process for polycarbonate automotive exterior trim.
Decoma, at its LexaMar Division in Boyne City, MI developed the technology to produce exterior trim components with superior weathering performance, top-quality high-gloss finish and an abrasion-resistant surface for products such as roof panels, appliques and cowl screens.
Durability of products using the new process will be 2-3 times longer than standard hardcoat applications. The new synchronous process combines advanced part-cleaning technology with an automatic coating 'auto add' system that continually replenishes and monitors the coating level and chemical make-up. The process results in more consistent control of hardcoat resin formulation.
Exterior trim components made with the new hardcoat technology are scheduled to appear on several future OEM programs.
The new process will initially be available in North America.
