Nuclear project

Aker Kvaerner is to build a facility to remove, sort and transfer nuclear waste from the Dungeness A power station in Kent.
The project, valued at around £3.5million, was awarded by British Nuclear Group (BNG), the organisation responsible for decommissioning the country’s nuclear power stations.
The project involves both structural modifications and installation of new equipment for retrieval and storage of fuel element debris from the plant’s active waste vaults.
‘Our in-house technical expertise and experience in the nuclear sector, together with our HSE performance on similar projects, were key factors in us beign awarded this important contract,’ comments Mark Leggett, president of AK Engineering Services.
The project is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.
On a related note, BNG has been awarded a two-year contract by the DTI to manage a programme ‘to provide physical protection and security’ at nuclear sites in Russia. Regarded as a pilot project, the contract has two parts: to improve security at a site in Moscow, and to assist in a project to improve nuclear materials accounting at a plant in Siberia. Most of the work, which includes building fences, security systems and access controls, will be carried out by Russian sub-contractors.
