WWEM 2006 – Conference Details Announced

WWEM 2006 will focus on the regulations, procedures and technologies involved with compliance monitoring of aqueous discharges to the environment.
The keynote speech will be given by Chris Howes, the Environment Agency’s Head of Modern Regulation and a range of expert speakers will give presentations on complementary issues relating to water monitoring. WWEM 2006 will take place at the Telford International Centre on 1st and 2nd November 2006. It is jointly organised by SWIG (sensors for water interest group) and Environmental Technology Publications with support from the Environment Agency.
The Environment Agency is modernising its approach to regulation. Modern regulation focuses on environmental outcomes and places greater responsibility on industry. Under this approach operators have a right to lower levels of regulatory attention through good management of their sites and high environmental standards. To underpin this approach the Agency is specifying performance standards and requiring the use of appropriate monitoring systems. Assessments through its Operator Monitoring Assessment scheme (OMA) of operators’ self-monitoring arrangements and MCERTS, are fundamental building blocks of the Agency’s modernising regulation agenda. Industry too has its role to play and the Water Industry Telemetry Standards shows the way to handle monitoring data in the 21st century.
Looking forward to WWEM 2006, John Tipping who manages MCERTS for the Environment Agency, says “I congratulate those organisations that already have MCERTS certificates and I am delighted that a large number of companies have applications underway. WWEM looks set to become a major event in the water calendar”
Following the success of the inaugural WWEM in 2005, organiser Marcus Pattison has announced that a much larger venue has been chosen for 2006. “Entry to the Workshops and Exhibition will be free and Conference delegates will be charged £50/day. Lunch and refreshments will also be free of charge. In 2005, we were unable to accommodate all of the exhibitors requesting space (there was a waiting list of 46 and the show was sold out 6 months in advance, however, Telford offers a higher number of positions and 3m x 3m stands are available on a first-come, first-served basis. However, if you visit the website you will see that most of the stands are already sold, so I would urge everyone to act without delay”
