New safety valve testing service eliminates production downtime
15 Jun 2006
Spirax Sarco has launched its EasiTest safety valve testing service, which eradicates the production downtime that conventional test methods demand. This substantially reduces the costs of regular safety valve testing, which is required by most insurance companies.
Safety valves sticking, or valves that have been tampered with or left dormant for a long time, may not lift at their intended set pressure and this can allow a damaging or even dangerous build up of pressure. Conventionally, safety valves are checked by raising the pressure in the system to the valve’s set point, but that wastes energy and may not always be possible. Alternatively, valves can be removed for off-line checks, but this causes expensive production downtime.
With Spirax Sarco EasiTest, safety relief valves are tested in-situ and without raising the pressure in the system.
Spirax Sarco EasiTest is a highly accurate computer controlled system that checks on-line safety valves by measuring how much force it takes to lift the valve disc off its seat.
By offering an accurate test of the valve’s set pressure, EasiTest provides evidence to insurance companies of regular checking of the pressure system. Spirax Sarco’s EasiTest is the first in-situ system to attain SAFed (Safety Assessment Federation) approval. The procedure has also been approved by the Lloyd’s Register and Royal and Sun Alliance Insurance and the equipment has TÜV approval. Testing is to the API 576 standard.
Spirax Sarco EasiTest makes it straightforward to test large or inaccessible valves, including those that are welded in place. In fact, EasiTest is suitable for most safety valve sizes and types.
Spirax Sarco’s comprehensive valve testing services includes a survey of all the safety valves on a site. Spirax Sarco can provide a written report that details the unique set pressure and spring performance of each valve, complete with an action plan for planned maintenance. Spirax Sarco can also retain historical records for all safety valve tests and installations.
