New variable capacity ‘plug and play’ drive /compressor package.

Expanding on its strategy of serving focused markets with dedicated products developed specifically for those markets, Danfoss Drives has launched a refrigeration compressor drive as part of the new VTZ Compressor DriveTM package.
Developed in concert with the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Division, the new drive is designed as a ‘plug and play’ packaged solution together with the Danfoss Maneurop reciprocating compressor to provide an optimised design and packaged solution dedicated to refrigeration applications. This makes for simple selection, the drive and compressor being ordered as a matched set and this in turn leads to reduced set-up time and lower installation costs.
Refrigeration compressors are normally selected to meet the demand of maximum expected system loads. Since loads vary throughout the year, any compressor designed for maximum loads will be oversized during long periods, potentially 85% of the time. The conventional regulation systems used for compensating this excess capacity are on / off controls, pressure regulation unloading valves or hot gas bypass. In comparison with these crude and inefficient methods, the Danfoss variable speed VTZ Compressor DriveTM offers a superior, innovative and energy efficient solution.
In a standard hermetic piston compressor, the capacity is fixed and the electrical motor and crankshaft rotate at a speed of 2900 rpm (50Hz). In a VTZ Compressor DriveTM, the rotation speed is variable over a frequency range from 30 to 90 Hz, varying the motor speed from 1800 to 5400 rpm depending on the cooling needs. In this way, the compressor is always well dimensioned with respect to the cooling needs, providing optimum performance across the whole operating range.
Because of this, in comparison with a single speed compressor, the variable speed model can be designed several sizes smaller to match the nominal system load, hence increasing efficiency at every operating capacity. In addition to the reduced energy consumption of the VTZ Compressor DriveTM at reduced speed for so much of its operational cycle, other benefits also derive from reduced speed operation. The limited number of on / off cycles and inherent soft-starting characteristics of the inverter drive dramatically reduce the mechanical and electrical stresses on the compressor and other mechanical parts of the installation. Equally, reduced speed running and the limited number of starts and stops, particularly at night, results in a significant noise reduction, critical where installations are close to residential areas.
