Ineos to build waste-to-energy plant

Runcorn, UK -- Ineos ChlorVinyls plans to build a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facility at Picow Farm, Weston Point, in Runcorn. The 50-megawatt unit could provide 20% of the company’s manufacturing energy needs at the Cheshire chemicals site, said a 21 Sept Ineos statement.
According to Ineos ChlorVinyls, the project, which is due to come on-stream by 2010, will employ the latest energy-from-waste technology to burn fuel derived from domestic refuse. The company said it will submit a detailed planning application for the project to the Department for Trade & Industry by the yearend.
“The CHP facility we are proposing to build at Runcorn will be important for Ineos ChlorVinyls in terms of securing energy for our processes,” said Chris Tane, chief executive officer of Ineos ChlorVinyls. He added that the energy-from-waste technology would help the company to counter high gas costs in the UK.
The project will also “be beneficial for local authorities in that it will help them to resolve the difficulties they face in disposing of waste," according to the Ineos ChlorVinyls boss.
