Kaneka Belgium is investing in a new membrane system to enable it to use canal water for its production processes
Erlangen, Germany — Speciality chemicals company Kaneka Belgium NV, part of Kaneka Corp. of Japan, is investing in a new membrane filter/system to enable it to use canal water for its production processes.
Kaneka Belgium manufactures impact modifiers for PVC as well as polyolefin foams, elastic sealant base polymer and adhesive base polymers. The Oevel, Belgium-based operation currently uses well water to meet its requirement for process and de-mineralised water.
However, as the well-water process generates significant amounts of wastewater, Kaneka Belgium has now decided to install a micro-filtration annex reverse osmoses system to treat the water. from a local canal. The equipment from Siemens will include a prefilter screen, two Memcor XP micro-porous membrane systems and a reverse osmosis unit.
According to the supplier, the technology allows continuous treatment of water at a rate of 45 cubic meters per hour. The filter system, added Siemens, is designed retain suspended and dissolved solids to produce consistently high quality process water regardless of water conditions.
