Lafarge sets up sand substitute plant
28 Aug 2007
Grantham, UK -- Lafarge Aggregates has recently established a plant at Whitwell Quarry to produce a sand substitute for use in concrete manufacture. The project involved the installation of a vertical shaft impact crusher, a sizer and new structural steelwork, as well as engineering work to modify and reposition conveyors.
The plant features a five-deck, one-metre wide sizer -- a type S1054 unit supplied by Mogensen Raw Materials Handling. It is powered by two Invicta rotary electric vibrators, Type BLz 45-45/4, each rated at 2685 watts, and works in closed circuit with the crusher.
The plant can handle over 100tph of -20mm dolomite and extract around 40tph of –6.3mm stone -- the sand substitute. The required product passes through all five decks and the entire oversize stone is recycled to the crusher.
Production rates vary with moisture content, so a piano-wire panel is used in the lowest deck position during the winter months to ensure continuity of output.
