The Shell petrochemicals facility in Singapore

UOP LLC, part of Honeywell has announced that its technology has been selected to produce key petrochemicals in a new complex in Brunei. Brunei Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of China’s Zhejiang Hengyi Group Co., will use several of Honeywell’s UOP technologies to produce aromatics, which are key materials used in the production of polymers, plastics, resins and synthetic fibers such as polyester and nylon.

Valvekits is supplying over 250 valve mounting kits and spool pieces for an LNG facility under construction in the US. The UK-manufactured mounting kits and spool pieces will provide adaptation for fluid power actuators on ball valves ranging in size from 75 to 1000mm, including a number of cryogenic valves. The Valvekits products are being supplied in batches to parent group Rotork’s facilities in Bilbao, to meet the production schedule of the Spanish valvemaker Poyam Valves. The final destination is a new LNG production plant being built by Bechtel International Inc. for Cheniere Energy Inc. in Louisiana.

ABB has been appointed the main electrical contractor for a new semi-submersible central processing facility (CPF) at the Ichthys oil and gas field in the Timor Sea off Western Australia. The order is valued at $15 million. ABB was awarded the MEC contract by the EPC contractor for the central processing facility, Samsung Heavy Industries. When completed in 2016 the CPF will be the largest offshore production facility in the world.

Wood Group businesses have secured 11 new contracts in Africa totaling approximately $240m, over the last 12 months: Wood Group PSN has won contracts to provide operations & maintenance and construction services to clients in Equatorial Guinea, Chad and Algeria. Wood Group GTS has secured a long-term service agreement covering two GE Frame 9E gas turbines for an operator in Ghana. Wood Group Mustang is providing detailed engineering for wellhead platforms, a production processing platform and a living quarters platform for an offshore project in Angola.

Alfa Laval is to supply compact heat exchangers to a gas plant being built in Russia. The order, booked in the company’s energy & environment segment, has a value of about SEK60m and delivery is scheduled to start in 2013 and be finalised in 2014. The units will be installed in a new gas plant in the Urengoy gas field in Russia. They will be used for heat recovery in the gas compression process.

Redhall Manufacturing has received orders totalling £7.5m across three contracts involving its expertise in blast doors and other blast and fire resistant structures. The largest of the three contracts at £4.1 million is for Hyundai Heavy Industries on the new BP Clair Ridge project.

Wood Group GTS has signed a four-year operations and maintenance contract with Entegra Power Group and Sundevil Power Holdings to operate the Gila River Power Station, one of the largest independent power plants in the US. (Read more)

GE’s pressure control business has received contracts to supply its field-proven technology for a new well to be drilled in Cairn India’s Ravva block off the east coast of India. This milestone project demonstrates how GE technology can be deployed to help meet India’s growing energy requirements.

AMEC has won two contracts by Fusion for Energy (F4E), the organisation responsible for providing Europe´s contribution to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) being constructed in the south of France. (Read more)

Redhall Engineering has been awarded an £8m contract to provide integrated, multi-discipline engineering services to Polimeri Europa UK Ltd; a wholly owned subsidiary of Versalis spa, a member of the Eni Group. The three-year agreement will involve the provision of integrated maintenance, shutdown and project support at Polimeri’s elastomer production plant in Hythe, Hampshire, delivering everything from site-based mechanical maintenance routines, to column de-inventory and high pressure water cleaning.

GE Oil & Gas and the Angolan group GLS Holding SA are forming a new JV, GE-GLS Oil & Gas Angola Ltd, to better support Angola’s rapidly growing oil and gas sector. As part of the agreement, the companies are planning an initial investment of $175m to build a manufacturing facility in Soyo, province of Zaire, which will supply subsea equipment to the oil and gas industry in Angola, which is one of the largest producers of crude oil in Africa.

Alfa Laval has won an SEK50m order to supply compact heat exchangers to an LNG plant in Australia. Delivery is scheduled to take place in 2013 and 2014. The heat exchangers will be used in a new major gas processing facility in Australia where they will recover and reuse heat in the gas cleaning process, prior to the liquefaction. By reusing heat the compact heat exchangers will contribute to bringing down energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Weir Minerals has won an £8.6m contract to supply centrifugal high-pressure pumps for a new 200km pipeline project in Morocco. The Warman pumps will be deployed at three pumping stations along the pipeline, which will transport phosphate rock from inland mines in Khouribga to the port of Jorf Lasfar for processing and shipping.

Xylem Inc. is to supply treatment technology and systems for a new wastewater treatment plant in Brazil that will serve 60,000 people. The company is providing its Sanitaire brand Iceas biological technology to treat wastewater in the city of Campo Grande in the Mato Grosso state of Brazil. The contract for the Imbirussu WWT plant was awarded by Aguas Guariroba. Xylem has installed more than 90,000 Sanitaire diffusers in Brazil to date, and is developing new and upgrading existing wastewater treatment systems throughout the country.

Thames Water is investing in tertiary sand filtration technology from Hydro International as part of its improvement programmes at seven wastewater treatment works to meet improved discharge standards for ammonia levels. The utility is installing the first 18 DynaSand Oxy vertical sand filters for ammonia reduction at WWT plants in Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire as part of its £multi-billion AMP 5 capital investment programme. The filters, selected by Black and Veatch, will enable Thames Water to augment the tertiary treatment process at the sites to meet the Environment Agency’s latest water-quality requirements.

Petrofac has been awarded two EPC packages, together worth $1,4bn for Saudi Aramco’s Jazan Refinery and Terminal project. The refinery is to produce around 400k bpd and have associated terminal facilities on the Red Sea near Jazan. Petrofac’s Saudi Arabia office will lead the project management delivery of the work scope which covers tank farms in the north and south areas of the development. Both packages are scheduled to be undertaken within three years.

Kuwait National Petroleum Co. has awarded AMEC a £330m project management consultancy (PMC) contract for a new oil refinery at Al Zour, Kuwait. When completed in 2018 the multi-billion refinery is expected to be the largest in the Middle East and will increase Kuwait’s refinery capacity by 615k barrels per day. The contract is expected to create around 300 new jobs for AMEC.

INEOS’ Innovene G and Innovene S polyethylene technologies have been licensed for OAO Nizhnekamskneftekhim’s new petrochemical project. The 300 KTA Innovene G gas phase fluid bed and 300 KTA Innovene S slurry phase HDPE plants will be part of a larger expansion at the petrochemical complex in Nizhnekamsk, Tartarstan, Russia. The planned commissioning for the complex is in the 2015 - 2016 timeframe.

SNC-Lavalin, in a consortium that includes GE International Inc., has been awarded a turnkey contract by PKN Orlen to build a combined cycle power plant in Wloclawek, Poland. The value of the company’s portion of the contract is estimated at $183.7m. The plant will produce 463 MW of power through a gas turbine with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and steam turbine. SNC-Lavalin’s mandate will include the provision of all plant equipment, excluding the gas turbine (with HRSG) and the steam turbine and generator. The company will also provide project management, engineering, procurement, construction, start up and commissioning services for the overall project. Construction is scheduled to start in March, 2013, and is expected to take 36 months.

Rosneft and ExxonMobil have signed a pilot development agreement establishing a joint project to assess the possibility of commercial production of tight oil reserves at the Bazhenov and Achimov formations in Western Siberia. The companies have also signed a declaration on protection of the environment and biodiversity for oil and gas exploration and development on the Russian Arctic Continental Shelf. The declaration sets out measures to help protect the Arctic’s ecosystems during oil and gas exploration and development activities to be undertaken by Rosneft and its partners.

PETRONAS has awarded INEOS the LL/HDPE portion of its RAPID project in Malaysia, utilising the Innovene G gas phase fluidised bed process. The 350kta LL/HDPE plant will manufacture polyethylene resins, including HDPE, LLDPE and metallocene LLDPE. The RAPID project includes a 300k barrels per day refinery to supply the petrochemical complex. The petrochemical component of the project will allow PETRONAS to expand its product portfolio from commodity petrochemicals to differentiated and specialty chemicals.

Metso will supply Värnamo Energi AB with a biomass power plant for combined heat and power production in Värnamo in Sweden. The start-up of the plant is scheduled for autumn 2014. The Euro 17m order includes a complete power plant, including installation, training and commissioning. The plant will have a thermal output of 13.4 MWth for district heating and an electrical output of 3.6 MWe. The plant will use local forest residues such as bark and wood chips as fuel.

Atlas Copco has won a $10m order to supply equipment for the second phase of Colombia’s largest hydropower project, Ituango. It will deliver a total 28 machines for underground, surface and exploration drilling, loading as well as stationary and portable compressors. The customer is the CCC Ituango consortium, consisting of Camargo Correa from Brazil, and Conconcreto and Coninsa from Colombia.

Sulzer Pumps is to supply pumping solutions for several concentrated solar power (CSP) projects in Spain and India. The scope of supply for the orders includes the design, manufacture and installation of cooling water pumps, feed water pumps, condensate extraction pumps and auxiliary pump packages. The pumps will be manufactured and packaged from Sulzer’s global manufacturing network and will be installed in 2013 and 2014.

KBR has been awarded a contract to execute project management and field construction for a large boiler project in Georgia. KBR’s boiler group will inspect and repair the recovery boiler and perform tube and economizer replacement. KBR will also execute capital expansion. The work will increase efficiency and production at the facility. Services will begin in Spring 2013.

BP has discovered an estimated 1 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas offshore Trinidad, doubling the estimated gas in place of the Savonette gas field, to 2tcf. An appraisal well was drilled into an untested fault bllock, in water depths of almost 300 feet in the Columbus basin about 80km off the south east coast of Trinidad. The well was drilled to a total depth of 18,678 feet.

INEOS Technologies has licensed its Innovene PP process for making homopolymers, random copolymers and impact copolymers to China Shenhua Coal to Chemical Xinjiang Coal Chemical Co., Urumqi City, China. Its 450ktpa plant, downstream from an MTO unit, will produce a range of polypropylene products for the market in China. In early 2012, the producer chose Innovene PP technology for its second MTO complex to be built by subsidiary Yulin Coal Chemical Co. in Yulin city.

IsoCool has secured a contract with Neproplast, part of Middle East construction group IKK. The project will involve a complete upgrade of Neproplast’s existing extrusion process cooling system, using equipment manufactured in the UK and Italy. (Read more)

BP has selected KBR as its preferred engineering and project management services (EPMS) provider for the ‘select stage’ activities of its ‘project 20KTM’ programme. The project will be managed from KBR’s Houston operating centre, utilising the company’s high pressure, high temperature engineering and management capability spread between KBR’s subsidiary, Granherne and KBR resources in its Houston and London offices.

Shell is to ‘debottleneck’ its Singapore ethylene cracker on Pulau Bukom: increasing the capacity of olefins and aromatics by over 20%. The engineering work will take place during the next maintenance turn-around of the cracker, which opened in Q1/10 – part of the Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex project, Shell’s largest-ever petrochemicals investment. It is integrated with Shell’s largest refinery, on Pulau Bukom, and with its world-scale mono-ethylene glycol plant on nearby Jurong Island.

A JV between Foster Wheeler and Three Streams Engineering Ltd has been awarded the FEED for the proposed Cenovus Energy Inc. Telephone Lake SAGD (steam-assisted gravity drainage) central processing facility phase A development. The project, in northern Alberta, is expected to have an initial production capacity of 90k bbd over two phases and an estimated project life of up to 40 years. It is currently under review by regulators.

SABIC and Shell are progressing plans to expand projects at their SADAF (Saudi Petrochemical Co.) JV, and are also looking to extend their partnership beyond Saudi Arabia. The partners are developing polyols and SMPO (styrene monomer propylene oxide plants at the existing SADAF site at the Al Jubail industrial zone - the first of their kind in the Middle East. The plant would employ Shell’s polyols and SMPO technologies to produce chemical building blocks for the polyurethanes industry and petrochemicals sector.

KBR is to carry out FEED work for an integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) project near Jazan Economic City, Saudi Arabia – expected to be the largest gasifier-based power facility built in the world. The IGCC complex will convert vacuum residue to electricity and utilities for a local refinery and export 2.4 GW of electricity to the Jazan region. This award follows KBR’s recent completion of FEED for the 400kbpd Jazan refinery and terminal.

Fluor Corp. has been awarded an early-phase EPC contract by PNM to provide environmental services upgrades for four power units at the San Juan generating station in New Mexico. Fluor is to design, build, install and commission new selective catalytic reduction equipment for each of the station’s four units to totaling 1,848MW of capacity. The equipment utilised is to provide one of the highest NOx removal efficiencies in the country and help address regional haze at the site.

Reliance Industries Ltd has awarded Foster Wheeler a contract to provide engineering and procurement services for its para-xylene plant project at Jamnagar, India – part of Reliance’s multi-billion-dollar expansion of the world-scale refining and petchem complex. FW’s scope includes detailed engineering, licensor coordination and procurement services for the new plant. The project will be executed from its Indian and UK operations.

GDF SUEZ, operator of the Bonaparte LNG project, has selected KBR to execute FLNG vessel design work for its project offshore Darwin, Australia – one of two contracts for a concept definition design competition for the vessel. The award also pre-qualifies KBR as a contender for the EPC delivery phase of the project. The concept work is now underway in KBR’s London operations centre in Leatherhead, and is expected to last up to 12 months.

ESR Technology has been awarded a five-year technical safety framework by Maersk Oil UK. This will provide quantitative risk assessment (QRA) and additional safety studies to all Maersk Oil UK assets in the UK North Sea. The contract is estimated to be worth around £1m.
