ABB to automate Scottish paper mill
14 Apr 2011
Aberdeen, UK – Arjowiggins Creative Papers has awarded ABB a contract to provide new automation technology at its Stoneywood Mill in Aberdeen, Scotland.
The new systems are part of a modernisation project that will increase productivity, product quality and energy efficiency at Arjowiggins, which manufactures creative and technical paper.
The Stoneywood mill produces papers for corporate communication and promotion, luxury packaging, industrial release papers and other creative papers and speciality applications. The mill’s two manufacturing sites collectively produce 200 tonnes of paper per day.
ABB’s delivery includes its System 800xA Extended Automation to control the central boiler house and integrate with other mill systems.
The control system, said ABB, will protect the mill’s paper machines’ steam and electrical supplies by replacing older, less reliable equipment, while helping to optimise energy efficiency. A new QC system integrated with the control system is intended to enhance product quality
ABB will also supply production management software to give Arjowiggins operators access to real-time and historical process data, and tuning and auditing tools that will keep the mill running at peak levels with reduced engineering staff input.
