Shell puts out Singapore refinery fire
1 Oct 2011
Pulau Bukom, Singapore — A fire at Shell’s refinery on Pulau Bukom island was “fully extinguished” on the evening of 29 Sept, the energy group has reported.
According to Shell, there were no casualties and damage was contained to the vicinity of a pump-house. Other facilities and units were said to be unaffected by the blaze which started around 1.15pm on 28 Sept.
The fire hit a pump house area, measuring about 150 metres by 50 metres, which has pipelines and connected pumps, and holds a mix of hydrocarbons.
Neighbouring units were shut down as a precaution. Shell also isolated lines and cooled tanks in the area to prevent entry of any fresh hydrocarbons and was ready to shut down all refinery units if this is proved necessary.
“Efforts are proceeding to further secure the site of the fire to allow investigations to commence safely and bring the situation back to normal at the refinery,” added a Shell statement.
Shell has started discussions customers to address any supply issues relating to the incident.
