Severn Trent workers to vote on strike action
13 Jun 2012
London – Members of the GMB trade union employed by Severn Trent Water have voted to reject a pay offer of 2% for 2012.
The company has refused to enter talks about an improved pay offer, claims the GMB, which now plans to ballot members about taking industrial action to further their case in the dispute.
There are 5,000 employees at Severn Trent Water covering all grades from the operatives to the admin staff to supervisors and junior managers.
“This 2% offer is the lowest in the industry and is well below inflation.” said Gary Smith, GMB national secretary for the water industry. “It is not acceptable to GMB members.
Smith went on to contrast the workers’ pay deal to that of Severn Trent Water managers, claiming that the company’s chief executive had a salary of £550,000 and plus a bonus of 120% of this amount.
