London – Alstom has been awarded a contract to supply the electromechanical equipment for the new Carrington Power gas-fired power station, near Manchester
The company will also be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment. The contract has been signed in consortium with Duro Felguera which will be in charge of building the new power plant for Carrington Power Ltd.
The total contract value is around £500 million, with Alstom’s share being around £325 million.
The 880MW power plant will be built under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract. Duro Felguera will be responsible for construction and sitemanagement. Alstom will supply two GT26 gas turbines and other key components, including the steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and turbogenerator.
Additionally, the company has been awarded a 16-year service agreement to maintain the equipment it supplied once it enters commercial operation.
Scheduled for completion in 2016, the power station will be located on the site of the old Carrington power station in Trafford, next to the Manchester Shipping Canal and the River Mersey. Up to 600 people will be employed at the peak of construction.
“This is the fifth gas-fired power station in as many years to be awarded in the UK that will have Alstom turbines powering them,” noted Steve Burgin, president of Alstom UK.
Recent gas-fired plants built by Alstom in the UK include: the 1650MW Staythorpe plant in Nottinghamshire; 2160MW Pembroke power plant in South Wales; 900MW Langage power plant in Devon; and the 1275MW Grain power plant in the Isle of Grain. Each of these plants is based on Alstom’s GT26 gas turbine.
