Hyundai Engineering has selected Honeywell’s Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) for two Kenya Electricity Generating (KenGen) geothermal plants in Olkaria, Kenya. The project is to increase KenGen’s total generating capacity by 25%. The system will integrate data from Olkaria’s different operating systems and centralise control room strategies at KenGen’s Olkaria I and IV power plants - each with a capacity of 140MW.
Schaeffler UK has supplied five FAG WiPro s online condition monitoring systems to wind farm developer & operator Fred.Olsen Renewables at its Crystal Rig wind farm in Scotland. These systems continuously monitor the condition of the main rotor bearings, gearbox and generators, with Schaeffler UK also providing remote monitoring services on a 24/7 basis.
Foster Wheeler is to provide consulting services for a World Bank programme to build up understanding of, and capacity for, application of carbon capture and storage in China. FW’s remit is to strengthen the CCS and transportation know-how of the China Power Investment Corp., one of China’s largest power producers, and of relevant government institutions.
Alfa Laval has received an SEK120m order to supply heat exchangers to one of the world’s largest petrochemical complexes in Saudi Arabia. Delivery is scheduled to start in 2013 and be finalised in 2014. The units will be used in the catalytic processing sections in the production of mixed xylenes.
Pumping washwater at the largest advanced digestion plant in the UK is being handled by Börger’s pumps. Powered by 18.5kW motors, three PL200 Börger pumps handle flow rates of between 23m3/hr and 54m3/hr for Anglian Water’s new washwater plant at Great Billing in Northamptonshire. (Read more)
AMEC has been awarded a five-year contract by the UK’s National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) for project management support to the refurbishment of NNL’s Active Handling Facility. The programme of multi-discipline projects will help to ensure the facility is refurbished and remains fit for the delivery of its commercial operations for a further 20 years. AMEC will provide a team of project and engineering management professionals to oversee the safe delivery of a suite of projects to cost and schedule.
Foster Wheeler has been awarded a contract by BHI Co. Ltd for design collaboration on two supercritical pulverised coal (PC) fired steam generators for the Buk-Pyeong power plant project for STX Electric Power Co. BHI, a licensee for FW utility PC technology, will supply two 595 MWe supercritical PC steam generators and other equipment for the project in Gangwon-do, South Korea. Commercial operation of the new steam generator is due for Q4/15 for the first unit and Q2/16 for the second unit.
Foster Wheeler has been awarded an engineering and procurement contract by Sadara Chemical Co. for a packaging center at Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia. The centre will be part of a world-scale, fully integrated chemicals complex that is being built by Sadara, a JV between Saudi Aramco and Dow Chemical Co. When complete, the complex - the largest ever built in a single phase - will be owned and operated by Sadara.
Fluor Corp. has been awarded a contract by Suncor Energy to provide front-end project management and engineering services on the energy company’s MacKay River Phase 2 oil sands project near Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Fluor’s design will include the use of its patent-pending third generation modular execution approach to perform the project. The modules will be fabricated offsite and delivered to the jobsite to increase project safety, quality and improve schedule delivery. The design will be completed by Fluor’s office in Calgary, Alberta, with support from its offices in the Philippines.
KBR was recently awarded a license and process design package contract by Jiutai Energy Group for its methanol-to-olefins (MTO) Recovery Project in Dalu New Area, Zhungeer Banner, Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China. KBR’s MTO technology will be used in the recovery process for Jiutai’s 600 KTA ethylene and propylene unit. The recovery process will take 1,800 KTA methanol to the MTO Reactor and convert it. The effluent from the MTO Reactor will then enter KBR MTO Recovery to separate 600 KTA polymer grade ethylene product and propylene product.
KBR and Southern Co. subsidiary, Southern Generation Technologies (SGT) have agreed a collaboration to jointly expand the global adoption of Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG) technology. KBR will lead the sale and delivery of all TRIG licenses worldwide, including those for power applications. SGT will provide operating and engineering expertise, along with ongoing R&D and technical support. TRIG technology was jointly developed by KBR and Southern Co. with the support of the US department of energy. KBR is a technology licensor of TRIG processes for industrial applications. SGT is a technology licensor of TRIG for the power industry and specialises in the development, design, deployment and operation of this technology.
The UK government has approved a Talisman Energy project that, it says, will extend the life of North Sea oil fields and generate millions of pounds of extra investment in the UK economy. The £1.6bn MonArb Area Redevelopment Project will mean the production of a further 100m barrels of oil equivalent from the existing Montrose, Arbroath, Brechin, Arkwright, Carnoustie and Wood fields. The project also includes consent for the new Cayley and Shaw fields. (Read more)

ABB has won a $29m order to provide electrical and automation systems for the conveyors at a new coal export terminal in north-eastern Australia. The Wiggins Island coal export terminal will eventually provide more than 80m tonnes per year of capacity through the Port of Gladstone. ABB’s scope of supply includes 13 modular switchrooms and five control rooms, distribution transformers, switchgear, drives, and a conveyor control program to manage ABB MV drives and motors. Project delivery is due for late 2013.
The UK government has given Shell approval for an oil and gas development that will add 2% to UK daily production. The Fram field, off the east coast of Scotland, is one of the biggest developments to be given the go ahead in the past five years. Once production starts, the field is expected to recover an average of 35,000boe per day. (Read more)
BASF company Wintershall is expanding its production and reserves of oil and gas in the North Sea. Through an asset swap, Wintershall will receive from the Norwegian Statoil ASA shares in the three producing fields Brage (32.7%), Gjøa (15%) and Vega (30%), containing reserves (2P) of around 100m barrels of oil equivalent (boe) . In addition, it is the joint intention of the companies that Wintershall takes over the operatorship of Brage, its first large production platform offshore Norway, subject to the agreement of the authorities and partners. A respective agreement was signed by Statoil and Wintershall today in Stavanger, Norway.
Aker Solutions has secured a three-year contract to provide operations and maintenance services to Total E&P UK Ltd and its joint venture partner DONG E&P (UK) Ltd at the new Shetland Gas Plant (SGP). The agreement includes provision of operations, maintenance and services support personnel for Total E&P UK at the new gas plant, which will receive gas from the Laggan and Tormore fields, west of Shetland. The contract will create up to 150 positions in support of the contract, both on-site at SGP and onshore in Aberdeen.
Fluor Corp. has been awarded an initial contract by Baikal Mining Co. for the definition phase of the Udokan copper deposit development project in Russia. Baikal Mining commenced work on the definition phase study with Fluor Canada Ltd and it is expected to continue through the remainder of 2012. The start of feasibility study services is anticipated for Q1/13 and last about 12 months. The work is being executed from Fluor’s Vancouver, Canada office with support from the Farnborough, UK and Moscow, Russia offices.
Wood Group Integrity Management (WGIM) has won a “significant” three-year contract with CNR Int. (UK) Ltd to provide pipeline integrity management and support services for itss UKCS assets. These include Ninian, Lyell, Tiffany, Toni, Thelma and Murchison. The contract encompasses 37 major pipelines, plus support for the Banff and Kyle fields. WGIM’s engineers will provide integrity management services, including software solutions and multi-disciplined ad-hoc support for all of the subsea assets.
Saudi Aramco has signed a corporate procurement agreement (CPA) with Yokogawa: a deal covering equipment supply, project management, engineering, spare parts, and maintenance services. The CPA is intended to simplify the process by which Aramco purchases process automation equipment from Yokogawa, which is the first automation vendor to sign such an deal with the Saudi major. Aker Solutions has signed a $50m contract with ENI for the Block 15\06 West Hub development project in the Angolan deep water region. Aker’s scope of work includes the engineering, procurement, fabrication, and supply of static and dynamic steel tube umbilicals, totalling 34km. The steel tube umbilicals will be manufactured and delivered out of Aker’s facility in Moss, Norway. The delivery date is in Q1/14.
CB&I has been awarded a contract by Huating Coal Group Co. Ltd for the license, basic engineering and related services for a polypropylene plant at Huating Industrial Development Area Gansu, China. The plant will use the Novolen gas-phase polymerisation technology for the production of PP homopolymers and copolymers. The plant will be part of an integrated 600ktpa coal-to-methanol project, which started production at the end of 2010. The 200ktpa PP plant is to start up in 2014.
Aberthaw Power Station in Wales is saving £350,000 a year on its oil costs following the installation of ABB variable-speed drives. The power station, operated by RWE npower, just west of Cardiff, is a 1,600MW coal-fired facility. To light the coal-fired boilers, the power station uses 36 oil injecting lances on each of its three boilers, with half mounted on each side of the vessel. Oil from the lances is blown into the boiler by fans at two rates - a high flow rate to light the coal and a low flow rate to sustain and support the burn. (Read more)
Lanxess has awarded Foster Wheeler an EPCM contract for a new neodymium polybutadiene (Nd-PBR) rubber plant to be built on Jurong Island, Singapore. FW completed the FEED for this project earlier this year. The EPC’s scope of work is due to be completed in 2014. The new facility, which says Lanxess, will be the largest of its kind in the world, will be designed to produce 140ktpa of Nd-PBR and will include process and finishing buildings, a central control room, a substation and a tank farm.
RWE Dea UK has announced the delivery of first gas from the Devenick field in the central North Sea. The field contains around 430 billion standard cubic feet of gas in place (11.6bn standard cubic metres) and is part of RWE Dea’s growth strategy in the UK.
Alfa Laval has won an SEK70m order for compact heat exchangers from a refinery in Russia. Delivery is scheduled for 2013, and is the supplier’s second large order this year from the same Russian refinery. The units will be used in the vacuum section of the crude oil distillation, where they will preheat the feed stream re-using heat from other parts of the process.
