Thames supertunnel contracts launched
29 Jul 2013
Thames Water today published a contract notice for up to £2.3 billion of tunnelling works to build its cross-London Thames Tideway Tunnel.
The notice published on the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) outlines three packages of work, split geographically for the sewage tunnel which will run from the Acton Storm Water Tanks in west London to the Abbey Mills Pumping Station near Stratford in east London: west (£300m - £500m), central (£600m - £950m) and east (£500m - £800m).
In addition to construction of the tunnel sections and related shafts, the contracts will also include works to modify Thames Water’s existing pumping stations and sewers.
This work will be in addition to the ongoing upgrade of Thames Water’s sewage treatment works (STW) in London as part of the wider £4.2 billion Tideway Improvements programme.
In May Black & Veatch completed a £140 million upgrade of the Mogden STP in west London, where Xylem, formerly ITT Water & Wastewater, supplied diffusers, mixers and pumps for the aeration element of the scheme.
Xylem was also handed contracts on the other STW upgrades in the programme: the £190 million Beckton upgrade, £220 million Crossness upgrade, £40 million Longreach upgrade and £85 million Riverside upgrade, all in East London.
The upgrade of Beckton STW and Joseph Bazalgette’s Crossness STW are both being delivered by Tamesis, a joint venture of Laing O’Rourke and Imtech Process.
Both schemes must be operational complete by March 2014 to meet stricter treatment standards set by the Environment Agency, which will assist the UK in complying with the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.
