Cory opens first AD plant
26 Nov 2013
Cory Environmental has opened its first anaerobic digestion (AD) plant capable of generating 500kw of electricity per hour.
The facility, located is Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, will initially process around 12,000 tonnes of material per year, including 7,500 tonnes of food waste from North Somerset Council (NSC).
The second phase of development will see an upgrade of the plant to a minimum of 1MW of electricity production
Cory Environmental director Alistair Holl
Cory Environmental director Alistair Holl said: “This plant will produce 500kw of electricity per hour, which powers the plant and is exported to the National Grid.
“The second phase of development will see an upgrade of the plant to a minimum of 1MW of electricity production, doubling our green energy generation at the site.”
The facility opened earlier this month and today Landia revealed further details about its GasMix technology being used at the plant. The mixing system from Landia comprises three 18.5kW chopper pumps and a self-aspirating system that reduces solids to produce more methane.
Externally mounted so routine maintenance can be carried out on the digester, the GasMix system, which is designed specifically for AD/ biogas plants, is energy efficient – as it only has to run for a maximum of 30% of the installed capacity.
As part of Cory’s on-going contract with NSC, it also made improvements to the on-site recycling facilities.
These included the construction of a waste transfer station and improvements to the Household Waste Recycling Centre and road network.
