In the year since the horsemeat scandal, what has the food industry done to strengthen its defences against food fraud, and is it enough?
The food industry was never far from the headlines early last year after a sample taken from a Tesco beef burger in January was judged to contain around 29% horse DNA.
In the year that followed, the UK food industry was thrust under the microscope and scrutinised about the security of its supply chains.
Initially much of the focus centred on discovering how such a large percentage of horsemeat could be found in a burger that was labelled as beef.
As much of the evidence pointed towards a breakdown in the supply chain, several reviews were commissioned to help uncover further vulnerabilities within the food industry and to determine where industry “best practice” needed more robust monitoring.
