Herts biomass project approved

Construction of a biomass facility in Hertfordshire will commence next year following the grant of an environmental permit.
The Environment Agency has issued a permit to renewable energy firm Navitas Environmental to construct a biomass facility at a site in St Albans, Hertfordshire.
Once constructed, the biomass project will be capable of processing 86,000 tonnes of dry wood waste per year, generating 12MW of renewable energy – enough to provide electricity for up to 17,000 homes.
The biomass development will provide a long term sustainable outlet for waste wood
Navitas Environmental director Andy Beck
The facility was issued its Planning Approval Notice by Hertfordshire County Council in December last year, and following a public consultation the Environmental Permit was issued earlier this month.
Navitas Environmental director Andy Beck said: “We are very pleased to have been given the green light by both Hertfordshire County Council and the Environment Agency to develop this state-of-the-art facility for generating renewable energy.”
“The biomass development will be a welcome improvement to the current site and will provide a long term sustainable outlet for waste wood, primarily from Hertfordshire, transforming it into ‘green’ electricity,” Beck added.
The £60 million biomass facility is being developed in conjunction with renewable energy projects development firm Eco2, and construction is expected to commence in the early part of next year.
