GE acquires water and biogas firm
1 Jul 2014
GE’s water business today announced it had acquired UK process firm Monsal, which specialises in the anaerobic digestion (AD) of wastewater and organic municipal waste.
Based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, Monsal provides technology to treat biosolids and biowaste and convert them into biogas and saleable byproducts.
The company has over 220 installed AD systems in the UK. GE today said it saw great potential in turning the biogas created by Monsal’s systems into electricity using its own Jenbacher gas engines.
“For many years, GE has been working to further the development of water reuse, wastewater and tough-to-treat water technologies,” said GE Power & Water president and CEO for water and process technologies Heiner Markhoff.
“The acquisition of Monsal, with its advanced anaerobic digestion technology, will enable us to provide our customers with more energy-efficient options for water treatment solutions. Now our wastewater treatment solutions can be combined with new, advanced anaerobic digestion technologies to convert biosolids to renewable sources of energy for our customers.”
We expect to expand our product and technology range with the GE resource
Monsal MD Aidan Cumiskey
Monsal designs, builds and commissions AD plants for the water, waste and agricultural sectors. The company’s managing director Aidan Cumiskey said GE’s acquisition of his firm would help improve its research and development capabilities.
“Joining the GE family will allow Monsal to bring our technologies to a significantly broader audience as well as give us R&D capabilities at a much larger scale than we have now,” said Cumiskey.
“We expect to expand our product and technology range with the GE resource, so that we become the ‘go-to’ company globally for anaerobic digestion.”
