Neway, an industrial cleaning specialist based in the north west of England, completed maintenance on three boiler shutdowns at the Essar Oil UK Stanlow refinery in Cheshire during 2014.
Neway provides cleaning solutions for the petrochemical sector, chemical plants, automotive industry, wind farms, paper mills and the food and drink industry, among others.
Its services include ultra-high pressure (UHP) water jetting, heat exchanger cleaning, chemical cleaning, surface preparation, high level and confined space cleaning, and project management for shutdowns.
For the Essar Oil UK Stanlow project, Neway managing director Wayne Sides said the company supplied teams of skilled cleaning operatives at the refinery where safe, effective and efficient working procedures are paramount.

The company also supplied operatives for stand-by duties, who are vitally important for any confined-space working and act as a safety lifeline for engineers working inside the boilers.
“There are very strict procedures for petrochemical industry shutdowns,” Sides says. “These require specially-trained staff with turnaround skills and knowledge of all health and safety issues along with the certification and permits required to carry out the tasks safely.
“Neway’s supervisors have all the requirements and experience to carry out these procedures correctly,” he adds.
To clean Essar Oil UK’s boilers internally, Neway used its range of specialist techniques and equipment.
To ensure that all work was carried out to the highest standards, detailed communication throughout the shutdown using radios to pass-on crucial information and to keep in contact with staff working inside the boilers was required. Neway supervisors also carried out fire-watch duties.
“This work showcases Neway’s ability to supply a complete industrial cleaning service with skilled staff managing the work and enabling the targets to be met within the required timescale and, most important, safely,” says Sides.
Marine cleaning
Neway also boasts another industrial cleaning division within its group of companies. Neway’s marine industrial cleaning services are used on ships, offshore oil and gas platforms and offshore wind farms.
Services include cleaning oil, sewage and galley tanks, engine rooms and bilge areas; disposal of marine waste, surface preparation and painting, propeller blade polishing, pollution cleaning, hot water jetting, dry ice blasting and UHP water blasting to clean steel hulled boats, barges, ships and other vessels along with wind turbines.
Neway Group managing director Peter Sinkinson says: “Neway is targeting more petrochemical shutdown contracts. “We want to build on our success in providing specialised cleaning teams to the very high standard required within the industry, which is always evolving.”
